Reno, like other major communities in Nevada, has experienced significant growth in recent years.  In 1970, the population of Washoe County was 121,000, in 1986 it was approximately 232,000, and it is currently estimated at 380,000.  Gaming and tourism comprise the primary base for the economy, but ranching, farming, mining, light industry, and warehousing are strong contributors.  The University of Nevada at Reno is also the home of the Grant Sawyer Center for Justice Studies, the National Judicial College and the National College of Juvenile Justice, which hold numerous sessions throughout the year, attracting large groups of judges and other court-related personnel from around the world.

The City of Reno is located in a valley on the eastern slope of the Sierra Nevada Mountains, at an altitude of 4,400 feet above sea level.  Reno is bounded on its north, south, and east by farm and ranch lands and on the west by the Sierras.  Lake Tahoe is a 45-minute drive from downtown Reno.  Thirty minutes in the opposite direction is Pyramid Lake.  In contrast to the lush setting of Lake Tahoe, Pyramid Lake is surrounded by desert and mountains of unusual and captivating beauty.  Both lakes offer a wide range of recreational activities, including world-class skiing in the nearby Sierras.
