Las Vegas remains one of the fastest growing and dynamic metropolitan areas in the United States. The 1980 population of Clark County (almost entirely metropolitan Las Vegas) was 465,466 and is currently estimated to be over 1.6 million.  While the gaming resort industry and associated tourism constitute the main elements, our local economy has been expanding to include light manufacturing, financial services and other diverse industries.  Many of the same factors that make Las Vegas a great place to work also make it a great place to live.  It is home to more than the famous Strip.  It also has family-friendly suburbs, and good schools and parks and affordable real estate.

The emergence of Las Vegas as a major resort destination has resulted in a world-class shopping, culinary and entertainment environment for those who live as well as visit here.  The weather is excellent year-round.  Mt. Charleston, only 45 minutes from Las Vegas, is a winter ski resort, and even in April Mt. Charleston (12,000 feet) can be covered in snow while temperatures in the Las Vegas Valley can be as high as 80F degrees.  Mt. Charleston and the Spring Mountains offer forests and spectacular views and winter sports. Lake Mead, with its 550 miles of shoreline, is located just 30 minutes away from the city and offers water sports and sailing year round.  The nearby Valley of Fire State Park is a 26,000-acre outdoor museum where Native American civilization has been dated as far back at 1500 B.C.  Residents and visitors can take advantage of the many championship golf courses, tennis, hiking, cycling and other recreational facilities found throughout the area, including beautiful walking trails and parks that have been incorporated so well in the residential areas of Las Vegas.

Is there culture in Las Vegas?  Absolutely! In addition to the shows, casinos and concert entertainment for which Las Vegas is world-renowned, there is the University of Nevada at Las Vegas, the Nevada Dance Theater, the Master Concert Series, the Las Vegas Philharmonic Orchestra and many other community and civic organizations providing cultural and entertainment activities, including a flourishing arts district.  The University’s annual Contemporary Music Festival is one of the better known modern music festival programs in the country.  The Master Concert Series presents artists and orchestras of international standing, such as the New York City Opera, the New York Philharmonic and the London Philharmonic. A good example of a family-friendly city facility is the Lied Discovery Children's Museum which is a leading educational and cultural institution in the metropolitan Las Vegas area, offering exciting and important learning experiences in the arts, sciences and humanities. With more than 100 innovative hands-on exhibits in 25,000 square feet, the Museum is one of the largest children's museums in the United States.
